Feds announce money for Nunavut water and sewage treatment upgrades
The Government of Canada has announced it will contribute more than $51 million toward upgrading water treatment and wastewater systems in Nunavut.
Iqaluit, Arviat and Chesterfield Inlet first in line for upgrades
The Government of Canada has announced it will contribute more than $51 million toward upgrading water treatment and wastewater systems in Nunavut.
Canada's Infrastructure and Communities minister, Amarjeet Sohi, announced the new Clean Water and Wastewater Fund Tuesday in Edmonton. Joe Savikataaq, Nunavut's minister of Community and Government Services, was also there.
The first three projects to receive a total of $36,675,000 from the fund will be in Iqaluit, Arviat and Chesterfield Inlet.
- Iqaluit's wastewater treatment plant will get $19,875,000 in federal money and another $6,625,000 from the city and the territory for upgrades.
- Chesterfield Inlet will get $1,050,000 from the federal government for water treatment upgrades, with the territorial and community governments contributing an additional $350,000.
- Arviat will receive $15,750,000 in federal funds for a new water treatment facility and an expansion to the water reservoir, with the territorial and community governments contributing an additional $5,250,000.
The Government of Nunavut is to identify additional projects for funding in the coming months.
