The Medicine Hat Police Service will investigate after a prisoner was medevaced after being found in medical distress last week in RCMP cells in Fort Smith, N.W.T.

N.W.T. RCMP announced Thursday that the police service from the southern Alberta city had been designated to handle the external investigation.

RCMP say that shortly after 6 p.m. on Oct. 16, officers checked on an elderly man in a cell and found him in "medical distress."

The prisoner was taken by ambulance to the local health centre where he was treated, but he was later transported to Edmonton for further treatment.
