Fort Simpson, N.W.T., mayor acclaimed
16 candidates for eight seats on council
Sean Whelly has been acclaimed to a second term as mayor of Fort Simpson, N.W.T.
Whelly said a big priority for the next three years is job creation.
He said he first came to Fort Simpson as a pipeline worker and now he hopes that mining activity will create jobs for people in the community.
"We do have the Canadian Zinc mine which is well on its way to getting established," he said. "They’re just getting their final water licences in place and hopefully we’ll see up to 200 jobs being created out of that mine, and certainly some jobs might be filled from Fort Simpson residents."
Whelly said the community also wants to find enough money to build more infrastructure, such as a new swimming pool.
While the mayor has been acclaimed, there are 16 candidates competing for eight council seats in the Oct. 15 election.
