Famous Dawson City hotel gets new owner
Northern Vision Development partnering with Tr’ondëk Hwëch’in on Downtown Hotel
Northern Vision Development is taking over a fourth Yukon hotel.
The company has partnered with the Tr’ondëk Hwëch’in First Nation to purchase the Downtown Hotel in Dawson City, famous for its drink, the Sour Toe Cocktail.
Northern Vision CEO Rich Thompson said the First Nation’s Chief Isaac Corporation is already the biggest single investor in his company, and it asked for some investment in Dawson City.
"We're not used to buying things outside Whitehorse, so this was a bit of a stretch for us in terms of the remoteness of it, so we have to get our hands around it. And we'll be coming out with news about that soon, but we'll certainly be running the main building as a hotel property throughout the year," said Thompson.
The Downtown Hotel has a bar and restaurant, along with 35 rooms in its main building. It has another 24 rooms in its annex across the street.
The purchase also includes a vacant piece for future development in the city.
Northern Vision, which is the largest hotel landowner in the territory, also operates three hotels in Whitehorse.
