Eetooloo Ejetsiak: Nunavut RCMP order review into use of force

Nunavut RCMP have ordered a review into how police handled a man inside a jail cell in Iqaluit.

Nunavut RCMP have ordered a review into how police handled a man inside a jail cell in Iqaluit.

A video shown in court last week appeared to show Eetooloo Ejetsiak being abused by police inside the cell.

An article later appeared in the regional newspaper, Nunatsiaq News, titled "Nunavut court: video shows police beating naked man inside jail cell."

In a news release, police say the article contains information, assumptions and commentary without the required context.

Police allege that on that day, Ejetsiak had removed some of his clothing and that his actions clearly demonstrated he was posing a risk to himself.

They say officers went into the cell block to remove Ejetsiak's clothing and they allege that he became agitated and seemed like he might assault officers.

The release says that's why officers used force on the man.

Police say they believe the use of force was appropriate, but say they've ordered a review of the entire incident in order "to be accountable and transparent to the people of Nunavut."

They also say incidents involving police use of force are complex and can require split-second decision-making.
