Black bear roaming downtown Whitehorse

Environment Yukon Conservation Officers are warning people to be on the lookout for a brown-coloured black bear in Whitehorse.

People walking trails should carry bear spray and travel in a group, say conservation officers

A bear trap was set up Monday morning in the area where a brown-coloured black bear has been seen roaming in downtown Whitehorse.

Environment Yukon is warning people to be on the lookout for a brown-coloured black bear roaming parts of downtown Whitehorse.

Conservation officers say the bear has been seen in numerous locations around the city over the weekend.

It's been spotted around the Hillcrest tank farm, along Hamilton Boulevard and around the clay cliffs below the airport.

Conservation officer Aaron Koss-Young says, so far, the bear hasn't caused any trouble.

"The bear has been exhibiting normal bear behaviour. It hasn't been in conflict as far as we can tell," says Koss-Young.

"But it has been starting to be seen a lot more in the daylight hours by the public and we are receiving more and more calls of the bear being seen."

Koss-Young is advising people walking trails in the area to be alert, carry bear spray and travel in a group.

A bear trap was set up this morning in the area.

Anyone seeing the bear is asked to call the Environment Yukon TIPP line at 1-800-661-0525.
