3 new members join Order of Nunavut
Three new members were invested into the Order of Nunavut this week.
Louis Angalik Sr. of Arviat, Davidee Arnakak of Pangnirtung and Jimmy Akavak of Iqaluit were honoured at a ceremony at the legislative assembly.
"When I heard that I was going to be recognized I was shocked and very surprised,” said Angalik.
He was recognized for his work as a heritage and cultural advisor with the Department of Education and for his work with on-the-land programs for young and adult offenders.
Arnakak was honoured as the founding chair of the Nunavummi Disabilities Makinnasuaqtiit Society.
“I am lost for words and just thankful for everything," he said in Inuktitut.
Akavak was recognized for his work with the RCMP for 30 years in community policing and victim support.
"When you are faced with hardships, talk about it with someone and move forward from it,” said Akavak in Inuktitut. “You will get further in life when you face your challenges and overcome them."
The Order of Nunavut was created in 2010 to honour individuals for outstanding contributions to the cultural, social or economic well-being of Nunavut.
