Newfoundland school buses were discovered to have safety issues following inspections on the Avalon Peninsula, the Newfoundland and Labrador English School District has confirmed.

Spokesperson Ken Morrissey said Tuesday that ServiceNL flagged issues to the school district following a requested inspection by the district.

"There were issues brought to the attention of the District by ServiceNL which the District takes extremely seriously," Morrisey wrote in an email to CBC.

"The District is ensuring its expectations for student safety are fully met by the contractor, along with the requirements of the student transportation contract."

No information was provided about what was wrong with the vehicles.

The buses are owned by a private contractor that services schools on the Southern Shore and in St. John's.
