Saturday marked one year since the passing of legendary Newfoundland singer-songwriter Ron Hynes, and many took to social media to celebrate and remember the musical icon.

Hynes, who became known as "the man of a thousand songs," released seven solo albums over his musical career which spanned more than four decades, making him one of the province's most beloved artists.

Hynes was also a founding member of the Wonderful Grand Band, and acted in various roles for both screen and stage.

He died at the age of 64 after battling cancer, first in his throat, then spreading to his hip and lung.

Hynes' music was popular throughout Newfoundland and Labrador and abroad, with more than a hundred different artists from all over the world recording their own versions of his songs.

The impact of his music was felt across the province and across generations.

"This was someone who knew us, and of course he did — he was one of us," wrote q host Tom Power after Hynes' death.

Many more people took to social media Saturday to remember Hynes and his music.
