Parts of Newfoundland could see heavy snow, rain mix Thursday
Heaviest snow expected to fall west of the Avalon Peninsula, through to Terra Nova
Parts of the Avalon Peninsula and southern Newfoundland can expect a winter mix of snow and rain on Thursday.
The snow will move in throughout Wednesday night and Thursday morning, says CBC meteorologist Ashley Brauweiler.
The snow should switch to flurries in the morning, then move to drizzle as temperatures warm before redeveloping into snow across the eastern half of Newfoundland Thursday afternoon.
"Temperatures will start mild … but they'll drop through the day." Brauweiler said, adding winds will shift southwest to northwest.
"[The second] round will be a lot more fluffy. So we could pick up, you know, a little bit more on the back end of that system."
Snowfall warnings have been issued by Environment Canada for Gander, Terra Nova, Bonavista North and the Connaigre Peninsula.
Brauweiler said snowfall totals of five to 15 centimetres of are expected through Thursday morning, along with another five to 10 centimetres in the afternoon.
The heaviest snow will fall west of the Avalon and through to Terra Nova, she said.
Parts of western Newfoundland and the Northern Peninsula will avoid most of the system but will likely see flurries. The west coast of the island remains under a snow squall watch, which will end Wednesday evening.
