'Newfoundland Moose' wins 3 gold, 1 silver at Special Olympics World Games

A decorated athlete from this province has four more medals to add to his collection after a stellar performance at the 2015 Special Olympics World Games.

Powerlifter Jackie  "The Newfoundland Moose" Barrett, 42, won three golds and one silver at the Los Angeles games, which wrapped up this weekend.

Veteran Corner Brook powerlifter Jackie "Newfoundland Moose" Barrett is competing at the Special Olympics World Games in Los Angeles this week. Felicia LaTour met up with him at a workout.

A 277.5 kilogram-squat earned Barrett a gold medal, as well as a new provincial Men's Master-1 Super-heavyweight record.

Barrett then deadlifted 297.5 kilograms for another gold medal and a new Special Olympics World Games record.

He also took the overall gold medal with the highest combined score, and a silver medal in the bench press with a lift of 122.5 kilograms.

On his Facebook fan page, the autistic Newfoundlander, originally from the Gillams area, wrote, "Thanks everybody for "Believing in 'The Moose."

Barrett, who trains for three hours a day, has been powerlifting for more than 20 years.
