Nest-building osprey causes power outage in St. John's

Newfoundland Power says a power outage in the east end of St. John's Thursday morning was caused by falling debris from a large bird building a nest.

Newfoundland Power says a power outage in the east end of St. John's Thursday morning was caused by falling debris from a large bird building a nest.

Company spokesperson Michelle Coughlan said the debris hit the power lines, which caused the outage.

Coughlan said the bird appears to be an osprey, and is safe.

The outage affected approximately 2,000 customers for 45 minutes on Thursday morning.

It's the second time in as many weeks that avian activity has knocked out electricity.

Last week, a crow came in contact with substation equipment, disrupting power in Conception Bay South for a short time.
