N.L. fattest province in Canada, StatsCan report shows
Newfoundland and Labrador tips the scale in a new report from Statistics Canada, that shows one in three people in the province are obese.
The 2014 survey of Canadians 18 and older reported a slight increase in obesity rates for men and women over a one year period, but a notable jump from 2003 when the obesity rates were 14.5 per cent for women and 16 per cent for men.
The obesity rate among Canadian men now sits at 21.8 per cent while the rate among women is at 18.7 per cent.
This province has surpassed the national average of 20.2 per cent by 10 percentage points, making it the second most obese region in the country and the most obese province.
According to the report, 33.7 per cent of those surveyed in the Northwest Territories are obese.
The Canadian Community Health Survey also showed that Newfoundland and Labrador has higher smoking rates than the rest of the country, as well as the highest rate of people diagnosed with diabetes.
