Electronic-pop group Repartee leads all Music NL award contenders with six nominations, including album of the year.

The 2016 nominations were announced Wednesday at Fred's Records in St. John's, with the awards to be held Oct. 13-16 in Bonavista.

"I'm very, very excited about having Music NL come to my town, and I'm sure everybody else in town is excited as well," said Bonavista Mayor Betty Fitzgearald.

The provincial government contributes $350,000 a year to Music NL, which goes to operations as well as market access and artist development.

"The music talent that exists in Newfoundland and Labrador is outstanding, and I firmly believe that we're on par with musicians from anywhere else in the world. We're probably well above, in terms of our talent," said Tourism Minister Christopher Mitchelmore at the press conference.
