Newfoundland actor Mark O'Brien is filming a science-fiction flick alongside big name Hollywood actors in Montreal.

O'Brien will play Captain Marks, who works alongside a military colonel played by Academy Award winner Forest Whitaker, in Story of Your Life.

"It's a sci-fi movie where basically Amy Adams plays a linguist who tries to communicate with an alien landing," O'Brien told the St. John's Morning Show Monday.

The film, which also stars Jeremy Renner, is produced by Denis Villeneuve of Montreal.

"It's not your typical kind of extraterrestrial kind fo movie or sci-fi movie and I think that's attributed to the director."

O'Brien, who played Des Courtney on Republic of Doyle for five seasons, said it's a great opportunity to learn from actors like Whitaker, Renner and Adams.

"It's kind of daunting in your head. [It's] a little bit of being like, 'Wow,' because you build it up but then you realize that there are just people ... just people who are extraordinary in what they do," O'Brien laughed.

"It's very exciting and the little boy in me is like, 'Oh cool!' It's like you can't help but be excited by it."

O'Brien said he is starting to film another movie in the fall, in which he plays a saxophone player.

The Paramount Pictures film Story of Your Life is expected to be released in 2016.
