An engineering student at Memorial University in St. John's took home the top prize Sunday night in CBC's Canada's Smartest Person.

Katy Warren, 21, was crowned the champion in the battle for smartest person.

"I feel awesome," Warren told CBC's St. John's Morning Show on Monday.

Ideally, pass school. I'm still on the hunt for a work term.- Katy Warren, on what's next after big win

The finale was recorded in August, and Warren said not revealing her victory was probably the hardest part of the whole process.

"Keeping the secret felt tougher than actually completing the challenges," she said.

"It was such fun, but of course people are always asking, 'Well, you didn't get out first right?' or, 'If you met these people it means you must have been in for this long, right?' so it was a lot of saying, 'I'm really proud of how I did and I [had] a lot of fun.'"

Next goal: a work term

While keeping the secret was stressful, Warren said she enjoyed the competition and still keeps in touch with her fellow finalists.

"I think one of my favourite parts was the other people who were there, particularly the other three who were in the top four last night. All of them are so lovely and we all still message each other every day," she said.

"It was so great to hang out with those guys and witness how smart they were. It was just sometimes mind-boggling to me."

She said winning the title has given her a major confidence boost, but as for what's next, Warren is still busy with her engineering program.

"Ideally, pass school. I'm still on the hunt for a work term," she said.

"Now that I'm supposedly Canada's Smartest Person, I am hoping to at least do OK."
