An 88-year-old woman in Happy Valley-Goose Bay is dead as a result of an early-morning fire that police believe may be suspicious.

At about 1:30 a.m. Sunday, police were called to a fire on Roberts Road.  Police said that, upon arrival, a resident of the home informed officers that another person was inside the burning building.

The RCMP and members of the Happy Valley-Goose Bay Fire Department entered the house and were able to bring her outside, but said attempts to revive the woman were unsuccessful. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

While the cause of the fire is under investigation, police said in a statement Sunday that the fire appears to be "suspicious."

The RCMP's forensic unit remained on scene Sunday afternoon, with the major-crime unit on its way from Corner Brook.

Anyone with information on the fire is asked to call the RCMP in Happy Valley-Goose Bay or Crime Stoppers.
