First Listen: Sound Symposium 2016

Sound Symposium 2016 welcomes audiences who are curious about all kinds of music, says Mack Furlong, a co-artistic director and master of ceremonies for the festival.

The festival of new and experimental music runs from July 8-16 in St. John's

Sound Symposium 2016 is a festival of new and experimental music that's open to audiences who are curious about all kinds of music, says Mack Furlong, a co-artistic director and master of ceremonies for the festival.

All the musicians are very welcoming," said Furlong,  "they want to play for you."

"But they also want to do what they want to do."

Furlong said this year's Sound Symposium, which runs from July 8 - 16 in St. John's,  has a wide range of offerings, from Middle Eastern folk singing to modern jazz.

Furlong added that the daily Harbour Symphonies, which involve ships in St. John's Harbour sounding their horns to a musical score, are favourite events for Sound Symposium participants and St. John's citizens alike.

"Every Sound Symposium, when I hear the first Harbour Symphony, [I cry] tears of joy," said Furlong.
