A 43-year-old woman and her 30-year-old brother drowned early Monday in the central Newfoundland town of Springdale.

A 43-year-old woman and her 30-year-old brother drowned early Monday in the central Newfoundland town of Springdale.

Police say the pair was on a boat tied up at a government wharf in Springdale's harbour when the woman apparently fell into the water while attempting to leave the vessel.

RCMP Sgt. Harold Nippard said the man tried to rescue his sister by jumping into the water.

"The brother, it appears right now, went into the water to try to assist the sister who was in difficulty, obviously, and got into trouble himself and indeed died," said Nippard.

Another younger sister was able to run for help after the woman fell in the water. Police say they received the call at around 1:30 Monday morning.
