Brad Gushue, Newfoundland and Labrador's hometown hope for this year's Brier win, opened the tourney Saturday with an 8-6 win over Alberta's Brendan Bottcher.
Gushue's rink is battling Manitoba's Mike McEwen and New Brunswick's Mike Kennedy Sunday.
