Grievance counsellors are at a central St. John's high school Wednesday for students and staff who are coping with the death of a teenager who was killed after being stuck by an SUV on Monday.

Tristin Brown, 17, was a student at Bishops College.

Brown was knocked down near the crosswalk on Topsail Road by an SUV turning left from Hazelwood Elementary.

His fellow classmates said Brown was a well-liked guy, who will be very missed.

"The school is really gloomy, you can feel it in the air," said classmate Kyle Lane, Grade 10. "Everyone is upset about it — it definitely hit everyone hard."

According to Lane, students were writing their names on Brown's desk to pay their respects.

"Everyone [was] wearing camouflage 'cause that's what he liked to wear a lot, and everyone's just paying their respects," he said.

Bishops College, where the young man was a student, said in a release sent to parents it had received word of the teenager's death Tuesday afternoon.

Bishops College said there will be counsellors and psychologists at the school Wednesday to offer support.

The school is encouraging students to talk about their feelings to a teacher, the school counsellor or administration.

Brown was previously reported to be in serious, but stable condition.

RNC Const. Steve Curnew said the matter is still under investigation, and can't say whether charges will be laid or not.

The vehicle involved was seized to undergo a mechanical inspection, which Curnew said is standard in this type of investigation.
