Driver faces charges after 3 international students killed in crash near Moncton

Three men in their 20s are dead and the driver is facing charges after a single-vehicle crash near Moncton on Sunday, police say.

RCMP said the vehicle was travelling east on Highway 2 when the crash occurred at approximately 5:45 p.m. between the Harrisville Boulevard and Shediac Road exits.

RCMP said the preliminary investigation indicates speed may have been a factor. The vehicle left the road, rolled and ended up in the median. 

Two 24-year-old men and a 29-year-old were seated in the back of the vehicle and were ejected.

Sgt. Mario Maillet said two of the men died at the scene and another died later in hospital.

The driver, 28, was also taken to hospital and later released. He was taken into police custody and released on a promise to appear in Moncton Provincial Court on Dec. 13. He is facing three counts of dangerous driving causing death, police said. 

Another 25-year-old male passenger who was in the front seat was not injured in the crash.

All five men involved were international students studying at the New Brunswick Community College in Saint John.

None of the five have been identified. 

A section of the highway was closed for more than 12 hours and reopened at 6 a.m. Monday. Maillet said an accident reconstructionist was on the scene. 

The RCMP is requesting the public's help with their investigation. Anyone with information about the crash or who may have seen the vehicle, a 2018 silver coloured four-door Subaru Outback with New Brunswick licence NDZ 829, travelling on the highway prior to the crash is asked to contact Southeast District RCMP at 506-387-2222.
