Saint John police are investigating after a "religious icon" was stolen from an uptown cathedral and thrown into a dumpster.

Sgt. Lori Magee says the item was damaged, but has been recovered.

It was removed from the altar area of the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception on Waterloo Street, she said.

Police received a mischief report about the missing icon on Monday.
The item was removed from the altar area of the Waterloo Street church, says Sgt. Lori Magee.

No other details about the icon were immediately available.

The cathedral, which opened in 1853, is New Brunswick's first Catholic cathedral.

It is one of the few structures that survived The Great Fire of 1877 and is currently undergoing a $10-million restoration.
