Help line set up for people who want to help refugees coming to N.B.

People who want to help Syrian refugees when they arrive in New Brunswick now have a toll-free phone line to call, set up by the provincial government.

The province is hoping to identify all the people ready to help out, when up to 1500 Syrians arrive before the new year.

Post-Secondary Education, Training and Labour Minister Francine Landry said it's part of the work being done to coordinate all the government and community services coming together in the effort to help the refugees.

"We are looking for Arabic and Kurdish speakers, people can also inquire about privately sponsoring refugees, people may want to volunteer with the immigrant services agencies that we have all around the province, and they can also offer to donate good quality clothing or furniture," said Landry. "They can also make a financial donation."

The toll-free number is 1-855-444-6554, and there's also a web page set up explaining the programs and resources in place.

Callers to the help line will be asked how they want to help out, and to provide their contact information.
