There's an unusual pumpkin patch in Deanna King's front yard on Saint John's west side.

The pumpkins are pink.

So far 60 have popped up, with more arriving every day.

King, 34, was diagnosed with breast cancer in March. Her friends came up with a colourful way to lift her spirits after a rough few weeks of chemotherapy and radiation.

Amazed by the community's support, King sent a video to the Ellen Degeneres show. The video has been viewed more than 100,000 times.

It was Charlene Thompson's idea to ask people in the community to paint the pumpkins and drop them on King's lawn.

It's so touching.- Deanna King

"Deanna is one of the strongest people I know," Thompson told CBC News.

"I'm really impressed with her attitude during her fight. She hasn't missed a beat. She hasn't missed any treatments, dinner with friends, a shower, a party — she's courageous."

The pink movement has taken off. Strangers are now dropping painted pumpkins on King's lawn. Some are covered in rhinestones and many have thoughtful messages.

King says she's on her way to being a survivor, and hopes her pumpkins spread the word about the importance of early detection.

"It's so touching … to know that people are thinking about you and wishing you well … means a lot."
