Miramichi Opera House club hit by fire

Miramichi fire crews were battling a blaze at a popular nightclub in the northern New Brunswick city Saturday night.

A witness who called CBC News described the fire at the Opera House, located on Pleasant Street, as major.

Police have declined comment, other than to confirm the fire. Fire officials were unavailable.

But a YouTube video shows the building engulfed, with flames shooting through the roof.

Dozens of comments about the fire have also been posted on a pre-existing Facebook site called "Opera House, Miramichi," which was created for former and current staff and patrons of the watering hole.

"Oh no! The Opera House is currently burning to the ground as of 5:45 p.m.," wrote Dan Ryan, who also posted a photograph.

"Here's to the best decorated nightclub I have ever seen. (I have seen many.) Goodbye my Old Friend and Party Place."

Tammy McCutcheon wrote: "No words can describe the OH. It was one in a million. Sad day for everyone."
