A pedestrian in Fredericton was struck by a police officer on duty over the weekend, the Fredericton Police Force has confirmed.

The incident occurred at a marked crosswalk in the downtown area on Saturday at about 10 p.m., spokeswoman Alycia Morehouse said in a statement on Monday.

The pedestrian was treated in the hospital for "very minor injuries" and released, said Morehouse.

Speed was not a factor, she said.

No information about how fast the police cruiser was travelling has been released.

"The senior police supervisor on duty was notified, and a report was submitted," said Morehouse.

The investigation is ongoing.

The name of the officer involved has not been released.

There is no word on whether he or she is still on active duty, pending the outcome of the investigation.
