The city of Moncton has started its public awareness campaign to remind people it will no longer pick up large flip-top garbage containers after July 31.

City officials say the bins are too high and too heavy and workers are getting injured.

A second crew has to be sent to help pick them up, costing the city between $500 to $1000 a day.

The city announced last month it would stop picking up the large bins and is now posting reminders on Facebook.

"Our collectors have already started distributing some door knockers to some households who are still using large bins and the door knocker simply states that after July 31 we will no longer be collecting waste in those large bins," said Isabelle LeBlanc, communications director for the city.

She said that collectors are also reminding people.

"If you want your waste to be collected properly then here are a few steps and one of them is definitely using a container that is 30 inches or smaller."

LeBlanc says the bins can still be used to store garbage in, but can't be used at the curb.
