Mountie killed during standoff in Alberta
For the fifth time in a little over two years, a Canadian police officer has been killed in the line of duty.
The RCMP say Cpl. Jim Galloway, 53, was shot during a six-hour standoff in a community west of Edmonton Saturday night. Flags flew at half-mast outside the force's headquarters in the city on Sunday.
Police went to the home in Spruce Grove after a woman called to say a vehicle out front looked like it had been struck by a bullet. Gunshots were exchanged when a man tried to leave, according to investigators.
Cpl. Galloway, a 31-year veteran of the force, was shot dead. A 39-year-old suspect was also hit. He later died in hospital.
An Edmonton television station reported that before the shooting, a man had called making threats against authorities.
He phoned CFRN's newsroom to vent his rage at police and, according to the station, told an employee that someone was going to die.
The RCMP said that Cpl. Galloway will be given a funeral with full honours. His most recent posting was in the police-dog unit of Edmonton's K-Division.
