Laval police are searching for clues in the death of a 22-year-old man who was found Tuesday evening outside an apartment complex in the Saint-Vincent-de-Paul district.

Police are treating the death as a homicide. The victim has been identified as Ferdinando Belmonte.

An emergency call was placed shortly before 8 p.m. reporting a man at the bottom of the stairs outside 4808 Lévesque Boulevard East, said Const. Evelyne Boudreau.

The caller thought the man had fallen down the stairs, but police soon confirmed that was not the case.

"The extent of the injuries were a little more serious than a simple fall down the stairs," Boudreau said, adding that the man had injuries to his back that were caused by some kind of weapon.

"We cannot say what kind of object or blunt object was used to injure the victim."
