CBC's Do Crew to lend a hand to On Rock Community Services

CBC's Do Crew is looking for eight volunteers to sort, clean and organize On Rock’s food depot, kitchen and 53-foot trailer.

Volunteers needed to sort, clean and organize food depot, kitchen and trailer

On Rock received 27 pallets of food during the Christmas and post-Christmas season, marking the first time the non-profit organization has ever had such a reserve. (Kim Reid/On Rock Community Services)

On Rock Community Services is a non-profit organization on the West Island. Many of its services are focused on helping people get access to food.

On Rock does this through its food bank, which feeds approximately 230 families every week, a school lunch program and a community diner that provides low-cost meals to individuals and families.

Kim Reid is the only full-time employee at On Rock. All other services are provided by the over 70 volunteers who give their time to cook and serve meals, sort and distribute food and make sandwiches for children in need during the school year.

Reid emphasizes that On Rock is about restoring dignity to the people who use their services. The Community Diner is more than an anonymous soup kitchen. It is a community hub where every birthday and holiday is celebrated. There are theme nights and a movie night once a month.

Next week, the CBC Montreal Do Crew will be lending a little help to On Rock.

Do Crew volunteers will sort, clean and organize On Rock's food depot, kitchen and 53-foot trailer.  If you are interested in volunteering, here is what you need to know:

  • WHAT: sort food, clean and doing some sorting and lifting in the 53-foot trailer
  • WHEN: Wednesday July 29 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.
  • WHERE: 9554 Boul Gouin Ouest, Montreal, Que.
  • WHO: 8 volunteers
  • Special note: It would be great to have three or four volunteers who could do heavy lifting (to re-organize the food in the trailer) The other work will be fine for anyone in good health.
