Winnipeg's Wall Street reopens after police investigation

Police in Winnipeg have reopened a section of Wall Street, near Portage Avenue, that was closed for hours Wednesday as RCMP conducted an investigation there.

The section of Wall from Portage to Wolever Avenue was closed that morning. It reopened shortly before 4 p.m., RCMP told CBC News.

Very few details were given, but a heavy police presence was seen in the area for much of the afternoon.

RCMP have been tight-lipped about their investigation all day. They would only say a news conference will take place Thursday morning "relating to a major RCMP project."

However, sources have told CBC News the Wall Street investigation involves the Rock Machine outlaw biker gang.

Earlier Wednesday afternoon, while the street was still cordoned off, an area resident said police officers banged on her door during the noon hour and ordered her out of her house because some kind of suspicious item was found nearby.

The woman said the suspicious item was located in the back lane between Wall and Goulding streets, and she was told police were planning to destroy the item in a parking lot behind her home.
