A Winnipeg man has been arrested after a police chase involving two stolen vehicles injured three officers who were hit by a car.
The first vehicle was stolen in the Spence neighbourhood around 12:40 a.m. on Sunday, Winnipeg police said in a news release Tuesday.
With the help of the police helicopter, police cars chased the driver, who was "driving erratically … putting all members of the public at risk," Winnipeg police public information officer Cont. Jason Michalyshen told the CBC.
"The driver was disobeying traffic control devices, high rates of speed, going into oncoming traffic, so really a volatile situation potentially."
Police used a stop stick — a device placed on the road to puncture a vehicle's tires — in an attempt to stop the vehicle, but the driver drove over it, hit a police cruiser and continued to drive on the damaged wheels, police said in the news release.
The driver eventually stopped on Herman Avenue in the Tyndall Park neighbourhood, but he jumped into another stolen vehicle, which hit three police officers who had gotten out of their cruisers to arrest him, police said.
That's when a police officer shot at the vehicle but didn't hit anyone.
The man continued to drive until he was taken into custody at McAdam Avenue and Aikins Street, in the city's Jefferson neighbourhood.
He was treated for minor injuries in the hospital before being detained in custody.
Two of the police officers were treated at the hospital and released. The third officer who was injured was not treated, police said.
