Vulnerable woman sexually assaulted on Winnipeg Transit bus, police say

Winnipeg police have charged a 46-year-old man in connection to a sex assault on a city bus.

A 19-year-old woman, described by police as a "vulnerable person", was seated near the rear of the bus when a man unknown to her sat beside her.

He then sexually assaulted her and tried to take her off the bus, police said. But the man was confronted by another passenger and then exited the bus alone.

Police said "vulnerable" meant the woman was either physically or mentally challenged. They wouldn't identify which it was, however.

The incident happened Oct. 11 at about 11 a.m. The woman was not physically injured, police said.

Members of the police sex crimes unit were able to identify a suspect, who was arrested Oct. 16 in area of Maroons Road and Empress Street.

The man is charged with sexual assault and failure to comply with court conditions.

He is still in custody.
