Tougher drunk-driving laws sought in Man.

Friends and relatives of two teens killed in a collision in Winnipeg last fall held a rally at the Manitoba legislature Tuesday to urge the government to toughen drunk-driving laws.

Senhit Mehari, 19, and Amutha Subramaniam, 17, died after their car was struck on St. Mary's Road at Bishop Grandin Boulevard on Oct. 31.

The driver of the other vehicle, a 17-year-old girl, has been charged with impaired driving and criminal negligence causing death. She cannot be named under Canadian youth criminal justice laws.

Yohannes Mehari said he vowed to try and change the laws after his daughter's death.

About 50 people attended the rally, where speakers said teens who have been found drinking and driving should face adult consequences.

Winnipeg police said about 70 people were caught drinking and driving this holiday season, more than in 2009. Those at the rally said that's proof the laws aren't working.

Rally organizers said anti drinking-and-driving campaigns should run year-round and not just during the holidays.
