A young girl died in northern Manitoba after she was thrown during a ride on a toboggan last Friday night, RCMP say.

The toboggan, pulled by a snowmobile driven by a 12-year-old boy, hit a tree stump on a path near the community of God's Lake Narrows, RCMP said in a news release. The 12-year-old girl was thrown and suffered life-threatening injuries.

The boy who was operating the snowmobile went to the community nursing station for help. A medical van rushed to the site and took the girl back to the nursing station where she died, RCMP said. Police were called about the collision around 8 p.m.

Three other people were along for the ride — a 14-year-old boy who was also on the snowmobile and two other 12-year-olds in the toboggan. None of the children were wearing helmets, according to RCMP.

RCMP continue to investigate and have not said whether any charges are pending.

God's Lake Narrows is about 540 kilometres northeast of Winnipeg.
