River search resumes for boy's body

Winnipeg police divers are back in the waters of the Red River to search for the body of six-year-old Nathaniel Thorassie.
Divers head back into the Red River on Tuesday to search for the body of Nathaniel Thorassie.

Winnipeg police divers are back in the waters of the Red River to search for the body of Nathaniel Thorassie, 6, who fell through the ice on Saturday as he played with his brother near the Disraeli Overpass.

His brother was rescued by a passerby but Nathaniel could not be found.

Rescue crews searched the frigid waters on Saturday but dangerous conditions kept them out on Sunday.

They went back in Monday until the sun went down and it became too dark.

Sgt. Rob Riffel, who heads the dive unit, has described the recovery effort as "black water diving." It is like working with your eyes closed because of zero visibility, he said.

Nathaniel's 10-year-old brother, Ralph Chartrand, was treated in hospital and released on Monday.
