Red River search for boy resumes
Winnipeg police resume their search for the body of a missing boy who fell into the Red River in early December.
Experts from Vancouver called in to assist
Winnipeg police have resumed their search for the body of a missing boy who fell into the Red River in early December.
A police dive team is searching an area of the river near the Disraeli Bridge in an effort to locate Nathaniel Thorassie, who is presumed drowned.
The six-year-old was playing on the ice and fell into the river near the Disraeli Bridge on the afternoon of Dec. 4.
Police and volunteer divers searched for the boy's body over several days last month but failed to find it. The ice conditions at the time were too treacherous for divers to continuously search for him.
Sgt. Rob Riffel said divers hope sonar equipment from a Vancouver company will help in Sunday's search. Recovery experts with the company will assist police.
"They're going to be shooting basically a picture of the bottom for us," Riffel said. "That may identify potential targets," he said. "We'll probably start diving on those targets later today and tomorrow," Riffel added.
