Two men have been taken into custody after an armed standoff in Portage la Prairie, Man.

Two men have been taken into custody after an armed standoff in Portage la Prairie, Man. ended with officers storming the home.

The two women who were found inside the house along with the suspects may be victims, RCMP said Tuesday afternoon.

Police said the tense situation, which forced residents on a street in the western Manitoba city to take shelter, started Monday night around 11:30 p.m. after they got a call about a suspicious man and a white car in the driveway of a home on Oak Bay.

Ray Ommerli, who lives around the corner from the house, told CBC News he could hear loud bangs every so often as well as police calling over a loudspeaker, asking them to come out.

When police arrived at the home, they found a 27-year-old man with a firearm barricaded inside along with two women and another 27-year-old man.

Mounties called in an emergency response team, brought in an armed vehicle, and negotiators. 

When officers fired tear gas at the house, the two women escaped, but the men stayed behind and barricaded themselves further.

Women in house possibly victims

The RCMP emergency response team eventually busted their way in and arrested the two men.

All four were treated for minor injuries, police said, adding one man was taken to hospital but quickly released. No officers were injured.

The two men remain in custody while the women have been released and are being treated as witnesses and possibly victims. 

Police have yet to lay any charges against any of the suspects.
