Pembina Trails School Division has brought in outside investigators to determine why its phones and computers went offline on Monday.

"Our entire network — computers, phones, etc. — is down," the division, which serves southwest Winnipeg, stated in a memo sent Monday morning.

Information-technology workers with the division then identified "unusual activities within our network system," superintendent and CEO Shelley Amos said in a statement.

"As a result, some of our systems are offline. We immediately contacted third-party experts to investigate. Our investigation is ongoing, and we will provide further updates as we know more," Amos said.

Schools within the division are open and classes are continuing, she said.

Pembina Trails School Division contains 36 schools, which teach approximately 16,000 students overall.
