Probe Research releases Boxing Day poll that shows NDP well behind Tories

A new poll conducted by Probe Research shows the NDP well behind the Progressive Conservatives when it comes to voting preferences.

The poll asked 1,002 Manitobans the following question: "If a provincial election were held tomorrow, which party's candidate would you be most likely to support?”

Forty-eight per cent of respondents said they would vote for Brian Pallister’s PCs. Twenty-six per cent said they would vote for the New Democrats. NDP support fell four per cent from the most recent poll.

Nineteen per cent of those sampled said they would vote for the Liberals, while the remaining six per cent voted for the Greens/Other option.

Voter support for the NDP under leader and Manitoba premier Greg Selinger has been falling for months, after a hike in the provincial sales tax (PST), and subsequent in-fighting within the party. Selinger will be defending his leadership against Theresa Oswald and Steve Ashton in March.

The poll is considered accurate within plus or minus 3.1 percentage points.

The Winnipeg Free Press commissioned the poll.

A Mainstreet Technologies poll in November showed 58 per cent of a sample of 2,019 Manitobans wanted Premier Greg Selinger to resign. It was released days after inner turmoil in the NDP led to the resignation of five cabinet ministers.
