Four years after 21-year-old Tyler St. Paul was killed in his cell at a Beausejour jail, an inquest into his death will begin.

St. Paul was attacked on the morning of May 16, 2011, at Milner Ridge Correctional Centre. He called for help, but within an hour of staff arriving, he lost consciousness and died.

Investigators later found he had died from blunt force trauma, and his death was ruled a homicide.

Last year, Manitoba's Chief Medical Examiner called an inquest into St. Paul's death.

It will begin with a standing hearing on Oct. 2 to determine who can participate.

The inquest will look at whether officers did enough to help St. Paul and what can be done to prevent similar deaths in the future.
