A Winnipeg man and his young grandson were left shaken after a man tried to grab the boy in a stairwell Tuesday evening.

Winnipeg police said the man, 65, was walking down his apartment stairwell with his grandson, 8, on Booth Drive at about 6:15 p.m. when a man walking up the stairwell asked them for the time. When the victims didn't reply, the man started swearing at them and chased them into the building's basement.

The man then threatened the victims and tried to grab the boy, police said, but the pair escaped unhurt to a nearby parking lot.

Police searched the area but were unable to find the attacker, Const. Tammy Skrabek said.

The man is described as between the ages of  25-30, about six feet two and 250 pounds with short, wavy hair and blue eyes. He was wearing an orange shirt with a black stripe in the middle and tan pants.

"So far there has been no information as to where this male is from," Skrabek said. "Police did check other businesses in the area and a hospital nearby and were not able to locate a suspect yet."

Anyone with information is asked to call the Major Crimes Unit at 204-986-6219.
