A goose caused a major power outage in south Winnipeg on Tuesday.

The Canada Goose flew into a hydro transmission line, which tripped the line and shut down power to a large area, said Manitoba Hydro spokesperson Anthony Koop.

Geese typically bounce off the lines but this time, the bird got tangled and caused electricity to arc and damage equipment, he said.

Traffic lights were off at a number of locations in the city, including:

  • Bishop Grandin Blvd/Pembina Highway
  • Pembina Highway/Plaza Drive
  • Pembina Highway/Chevrier Blvd
  • St. Mary’s Road/ Bishop Grandin Blvd

There were several crashes but no reports of any serious injuries.
