Former TV anchor Peter Chura to run for Manitoba Liberals
Former Global anchor will run in Seine River
Peter Chura, a former Global TV anchor in Manitoba, will stand for the nomination to represent the Liberals in Seine River in next year's provincial election.
Chura joined Liberal Leader Rana Bokhari for the announcement Tuesday morning at the provincial legislature in Winnipeg.
The constituency is currently held by NDP MLA and former cabinet minister Theresa Oswald, who announced earlier today that she would not seek re-election.
Until early September, Chura was the 6 p.m. news anchor and supervising producer at Global Winnipeg, where he worked for almost a decade. He worked as a Parliament Hill bureau reporter before coming to Manitoba.
"I've been covering provincial politics and federal politics for literally years — most of my career — so I'm familiar with the issues and the people and what it matters to the province, and especially my friends and neighbours in that area, in Seine River and south Winnipeg," he said.
Manitobans will go to the polls on April 19, 2016.
"I'm absolutely thrilled to add a candidate with the competence and character of Peter Chura to an already strong group of candidates," Bokhari said in a news release.
"He has been a pillar in his community and a trusted voice for all Manitobans. He will make a spectacular MLA."
The Progressive Conservative candidate in Seine River is Janice Morley-Lecomte.
