Winnipeg fire crews battled back-to-back fires on the same block of the city's North End Sunday afternoon.

The first was at a mixed commercial and residential building on Selkirk Avenue, near Salter Street, just after 1:30 p.m., the city said in a news release.

The building was evacuated before crews arrived and firefighters tackled the flames from inside, declaring it under control at around 2 p.m.

The second fire call came around 4 p.m. just down the same block.

Crews initially tried to put out the fire from inside the building but the deteriorating conditions forced them out, the city's news release said. Aerial ladders were set up to spray water and douse the fire from outside.

Crews remained at the building into the night, while residents were asked to avoid the area.

No one was injured in either fire, both of which remain under investigation.
