A woman died after being hit by transit bus in Winnipeg on Tuesday.

Emergency personnel on the scene did not have the exact age of the woman, but said she was elderly.

It happened just after 9 a.m. at Burrows Avenue and Keewatin Street.

Police are investigating the scene.

Michelle Horobetz told CBC News she rushed to the scene to comfort a friend who witnessed it. The friend was driving behind the bus as it turned onto Keewatin from Burrows.

At the same time, the elderly woman was crossing Keewatin. The bus hit her then drove over her, according to Horobetz, who said her friend is so distraught she can't talk.

Sean Marginet, another witness at the scene, said everything happened suddenly.

"I saw a woman crossing the street, and it was a matter of seconds," said Marginet. "She stepped aside the bus, impacted with the side of the vehicle and within moments she was underneath."

The Keewatin and Burrows intersection, which was closed for more than five hours, reopened at about 3 p.m.

People who travel through the intersection called it a dangerous one.

"I don't know why it seems to bottle up at this intersection most, and yeah it can be pretty scary," said Valerie Kipling.

Police have not released the name of the woman who was killed.
