Doors Open Winnipeg gears up for day 2
76 buildings in Winnipeg open to the public for annual Heritage Winnipeg event
Doors Open Winnipeg is set for a second day of welcoming visitors inside buildings not always open to the public.
The two-day annual event is organized by Heritage Winnipeg.
Doors Open Winnipeg has been growing in popularity since it first took place in 2004. According to Heritage Winnipeg, 2015 was the most popular year to date drawing 27,000 visits to sites across the city.
This year 76 buildings are part of Doors Open — including businesses, government departments, churches and museums.
Some of the 2016 Doors Open Winnipeg locations include:
- The Hazelwood Mosque, the first mosque built in Manitoba.
- The Edge Urban Arts Centre on Main Street.
- Winnipeg Animal Services on Logan Avenue.
- Winnipeg Senior Citizens' Radio Club.
- McDougall House next to St. Norbert Market.
- The Manitoba Legislative Building.
Volunteers from the Manitoba Living History Society will be at Dalnavert dressed in 1910s costumes to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the right to vote for some Manitoba women.
"This is a great way to learn and teach people about history," said Genevieve Woods, a volunteer interpreter with Manitoba Living History.
