A prison disturbance in Brandon, Man., was under control Sunday, a provincial government official told local media.

An unnamed official told CTV Winnipeg that there was a situation at the Brandon Correctional Centre but declined to provide further details, The Canadian Press reported.

A man claiming to be an inmate at the prison told the station nearly 30 prisoners were breaking windows and refusing to be locked up. Guards were using tear gas to subdue the alleged rioters, he said.

Officials at the prison declined to comment. The Mounties weren't called for assistance, said an RCMP spokesman in Winnipeg.

The Brandon Correctional Centre is located in the northeast corner of the city and is mainly a medium-security centre with cells for 157 male adults, according to the Manitoba Justice website.
