Body found in downtown Winnipeg hotel

A man's body has been found in a room of a downtown Winnipeg hotel after police were called to the St. Regis Hotel just after 11:30 a.m. Monday.

A man's body has been found in a room of a downtown Winnipeg hotel.

Police were called to the St. Regis Hotel, at 285 Smith St., just after 11:30 a.m. Monday. The death is being treated as suspicious, said police, who didn't release any other information.

Hotel manager Kyle Wyatt said the dead man had been at the hotel for just under three months. Wyatt said he was staying as a monthly guest through Health Canada and was undergoing medical treatment for an unspecified illness.

He described the man as quiet and reserved.

Two women who spoke with CBC News outside the hotel Tuesday said they were the man's niece and a cousin and he was in his early 60s.

The niece, Arica Antsanan, choked back tears when she said she found out about her uncle's death on Monday. She said she has no idea what caused his death.

"He was a generous, kind person. He would smile at everyone," she said.

A security guard at the hotel said the body was in a room on the fourth floor.

The police identification unit was still on the scene Tuesday. The homicide unit is also investigating, police said.
